However, a severe knock could dislodge a diamond and for this reason diamond rings should not be worn when engaging in activities such as sport or gardening
Caring for Diamond Engagement Rings
With everyday wear and length of time diamond engagement rings will attract dirt and grease on both their upper and lower surfaces causing them to lose their lustre and sparkle.
Perspiration, household chemicals, hairspray etc are all substances which will cling to the surface of engagement rings, gradually dulling their natural fire. Diamond engagement rings, because they are often worn every day, are particularly susceptible to this type of buildup.
The fire and sparkle of diamond rings should be carefully maintained by regularly using this simple cleaning method:
- Pour some ammonia based household cleaner into an airtight jar
- Put in diamond rings and screw on the lid
- Leave your diamond rings to soak overnight
- Remove the diamond rings from the ammonia solution
- Fill a bowl with warm water (do not clean over an open sink!)
- Use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently clean the diamond rings
- Ensure you clean inside the setting itself
- Finally, dip the cleaned diamond rings into cold water and pat dry
Storing Engagement Rings and other Diamond Rings
Engagement rings and other diamond rings should never be dropped casually into a box with other items. Diamonds are so hard that they can damage metal – for example the 18 carat gold or platinum settings of other jewellery. Diamond rings should always be stored carefully in a fabric lined box – preferably the one in which they arrive as this will be designed to contain and protect your diamond ring and its setting
