How To Clean A Diamond Ring Safely

10th June 2018
Blog

We are thinking about hanging this one up on the wall of our store in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.  Seriously, this is one that everyone buying a diamond ring should read and save.

It is very likely your diamond ring is for an engagement or wedding and if so, you will be wearing it a lot.  It’s going to be showered or bathed, very likely have lotion rubbed over it. As well as come into contact with washing up liquid, dirt, and grease  – after all you use your hands to do everything, right?

Understanding how to clean your diamond ring safely is fundamental.  Make sure you take care of your most precious jewellery so that it lasts a lifetime, and hopefully,  even more.

How often to clean your diamond ring?

We will start with the question of how often.  Obviously, this is dependant on your lifestyle and how careful you are in the first place.  If you practice a lot of sports, have a job which requires physical effort, and don’t take your ring off at all – then it will need cleaning more regularly.

More Activity = More Cleaning Required

women in sportSome experts recommend as much as once every 2 weeks, but really – we think this is unrealistic.   If you can get into a habit of cleaning your engagement ring every 2 – 4 months, depending on what is needed then this is enough.

Items we do not recommend you clean your diamond ring with

Before we go into the specific cleaning methods we recommend at Diamond Dealers Direct, let’s cover how not to do it.  There is a lot of really poor advice online & this is the reason we want this article hanging in the store.

Do not clean your precious diamond ring with any of the following:

Tomato Ketchup

Vodka

Toothpaste

Toothbrush

Vinegar

We understand.   Sometimes it can be really tempting (and requires no forward planning) to do a DIY job.

Whilst it might be fine to mix together an organic face mask recipe to freshen your skin.  Doing the same with a ring worth over 4,000 GBP is just not sensible. The methods we are recommending are very inexpensive and accessible to everyone who is in possession of a diamond ring.

So, please take care of your diamond ring properly and leave the ketchup for your chips.

Cleaning your diamond ring at home

Sometimes it is easier to clean your diamond ring at home and preferable to going to the jewelers.  So, if this is you then we have two jewellery cleaners that we recommend.

Town Talk Sparkle Jewellery Cleaner

And

Waitrose Gold & Diamond Dip

The methods for using these cleaners involve no toothbrushes or abrasive tools. Simply place your diamond ring into the cleaning fluid for a couple of minutes, or for the recommended time on the label. Then, dry with a soft cloth once finished.

Cleaning your diamond ring at the Jewellers

The best way to have your diamond ring cleaned is at your Jewellers.   Some smaller Jewellers will provide this service for free as a way to keep in touch with you and keep your custom. Make use of this service if it is available.

Check the charge at your Jewellers and make it a regular appointment.

We hope this blog post has helped and that you follow this advice, make sure your diamond ring is cleaned safely so that it lasts long into the future.
