How to choose the right wedding band for your engagement ring

As rings go, this is a big one. Some would even argue that it’s bigger than the choice of engagement ring.

Finding the right wedding band to fit your engagement ring is an incredibly tough choice. It’s a match that has to last for the rest of your life, and remind you of the most important day of your life every time you look at it.

Quite a task!

Engagement rings have a destiny, which is to be paired with another piece of jewellery. This pairing will stay with you forever, therefore both pieces need to harmoniously complement one another.

Some work brilliantly together and can be found quickly (you’ll just know it’s the right pairing), while some designs are incredibly difficult to match.

We’d like to help make this process as enjoyable and stress-free as is should be. With such a wide range of wedding bands on the market, you have a wealth of options, but how do you pick the perfect one?

Be careful not to eclipse the engagement ring

In fairness, the engagement ring made its way onto your hand first, therefore it shouldn’t have its thunder stolen.

Bear this in mind while wedding band shopping. Look for something that includes decorative elements that match the engagement ring but which don’t overpower it or knock it out of the park in terms of style and pizzazz.

For example, if your engagement ring features a particular type of stone, your wedding band could feature the same element, albeit smaller in scale.

Should you pick the same metal?

Most people tend to opt for a wedding ring that is cast in the same metal as the engagement ring, but the choice really is up to you.

There’s no right or wrong answer here - if you find a wedding band that looks perfect in platinum yet your engagement ring is white gold, thats fine!

Choice of wedding band style

There are three popular styles of wedding band that we recommend you focus on:

1) Flat bands: As the name suggests, these are flat on all sides and very contemporary in design. Simple, but elegant.

2) Court-shaped: These wedding bands feature a softly-rounded exterior, although like flat bands are generally very simple in appearance.

3) D-shaped: These are typically more narrow than the two above and feature a more expressed profile.

We recommend trying out one of each style above, because you’ll quickly settle on a favourite.

Final thought: curved or straight?

The last thing you need to consider is whether you want a straight or curved band.

The engagement ring’s style may well dictate this; if it has a high setting that doesn’t stand, a straight wedding band will generally sit nicely alongside it. If it has a low setting (such as a halo design), you may want to go down the curved route.

Have fun searching for your wedding band. The perfect match is out there, and if you use our tips above, you’ll find it in no time.
