Summer vs. Winter Weddings: Which Are Best for You?

Posted on 3rd July 2017

No weddings are made equal, as each one is determined by the individual tastes of those who are choosing to tie the knot.

Despite this, there are various types of wedding for couples to consider, with summer and winter nuptials prominent examples. These provide diametrically opposed experiences in many ways, so your choice will ultimately depend on the type of ceremony and event that you wish to host.

So, which one is right for you? Let's take a look at the pros and the cons for each:

Marrying in a Winter Wonderland: The Pros

There is something truly magical about marrying in the winter, particularly if you tie the knot in a romantic location against the backdrop of falling snow.

Not only this, but marrying during the winter can be far cheaper than tying the knot in the summer, as venues and suppliers tend to be far less busy and willing to offer heavily-discounted rates. Similarly, your dream wedding venue may also be more accessible during the winter, helping to secure your ideal location at a fraction of the cost.

And the Cons?

While winter may deliver a more memorable and cost-effective wedding in some respects, it is not without its challenges. So although you may have a long-held dream of marrying during a snowstorm, it is impossible to predict just how severe weather conditions will be during the winter. After all, heavy snow or blizzards could even place your wedding at risk, while strong gales and rainfall could also cast a cloud over your nuptials.

Similarly, marrying during the winter can pose an issue for guests, especially if you tie the knot close to Christmas. This could impact on attendance, or at least require your guests to spend more during an already expensive time of the year.

Why Should You Wed During the Summer?

The obvious benefit of marrying in the summer is that the weather is likely to be far better. While May and June still enjoy larger amounts of rainfall on average than April, for example, most summer days see extended period of sunshine that may be punctuated by brief showers. The levels of natural light also extend into the evening, helping you to enjoy an outdoor party and benefit from more photo opportunities.

The human mind tends to feel more positive and energised during the summer months, which in turn ensures that guests remain upbeat throughout the day. This can also create a greater mood during the reception, which may prove crucial as the evening progresses.

Finally, you may also benefit from more food options in the summer, such as a barbecue, an ice cream van and even a lavish, outdoor hog roast!

Are There Any Cons?

In terms of cons, it stands to reason that venues should cost more during the peak months of summer. The rising level of demand among couples also means that summer venues have to be booked further in advance, as otherwise you may find it hard to secure your desired date, day or time.

The summer is also susceptible to extreme weather conditions (on occasions), with oppressive heat likely to cause huge amounts of discomfort among smart and formally-dressed guests. This is not a major issue, but it can make it more difficult to soothe young children who attend in the day and the evening.

Ultimately, your choice between a summer or winter wedding is a deeply personal one, but these factors can help you to at least make an informed choice for the biggest day of your life!
